Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi on February 16, signaling India’s growing ambition to play a leading role in the global artificial intelligence landscape.

At Bharti Airtel’s display, he was briefed on what was described as India’s first AI-powered fraud-fighting network.

The summit, running through February 20, marks the first time the global AI governance event has been hosted in a developing nation — a move Indian officials say reflects the country’s intent to amplify the Global South’s voice in shaping AI regulation and deployment.

However, the event also drew online criticism, with attendees reporting overcrowding and long queues at the venue — logistical challenges that risked overshadowing the broader message of innovation and leadership.

As India pushes forward with initiatives like Bharat Gen AI and expands its startup ecosystem, the summit underscores New Delhi’s determination to be more than a participant in the AI revolution — aiming instead to help define its global direction.
