When it comes to defining player's preferences for D&D versions, everyone has a favorite system. Some players prefer 1st edition, others 2nd Edition AD&D, others 3.5 edition, and then there is 5th edition. But what are the core differences between the differen Dungeons & Dragons editions?
It's a great conversation that was sparked by this Twitter thread where someone asked the question: "For the players who played Advanced D&D in the early 80s: In 2 or 3 sentences, what is the major differences between that game and 5th edition? Someone is starting up a group locally, and I want to attend but I want to learn if I will be totally lost." Read the thread here: / 1612226357211332608
For me, I immedietely went back to the fact that AD&D had THACO (to hit armor class zero) and saving throws versus magic types, rather than everything being tied to stats. And while 5e has streamlined the rules to the point where everything can be found via a description with an attached role somewhere in the Player's Handbook or Dungeon Master's Guide, not everything could be solved with a simple roll of the dice in AD&D.
The 1st and 2nd editions of Dungeons & Dragons more heavily favored roleplay and creative solutions for problems rather than simply rolling dice for every little thing. But those are simply my opinions. What about you? What do you think are some of the main differences between AD&D and 5th edition?
