Fusion ignition is a critical tool for understanding the physics of nuclear weapon phenomena and thus maintaining confidence in the reliability of America’s stockpile.
The only laboratory on Earth capable of reaching these conditions is NNSA’s Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is home to the National Ignition Facility where scientists and engineers recently conducted yet another successful fusion ignition experiment, generating 5 megajoules of fusion yield.
The experiment produced NIF's second highest yield ever and achieved a new record target gain (energy output vs. energy delivered to target).
This work is foundational to NNSA’s Stockpile Stewardship mission.
Fusion ignition enables unprecedented support of scientific understanding required to ensure a safe, reliable nuclear stockpile.
