"That'll Be the Day" is a song written by Buddy Holly and Jerry Allison. It was first recorded by Buddy Holly and the Three Tunes in 1956 and was re-recorded in 1957 by Holly and his new band, the Crickets. The 1957 recording achieved widespread success. Holly's producer, Norman Petty, was credited as a co-writer, although he did not contribute to the composition.
Many other versions have been recorded. It was the first song recorded (as a demonstration disc) by the Quarrymen, the skiffle group that evolved into the Beatles. This cover version of Buddy Holly's classic song was recorded by the Quarrymen in 1958. A single 78rpm disc was pressed, making it the very first recording to feature John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison, plus Collin Hanton on drums and John "Duff" Lowe on piano. This song and another one "In Spite of All the Danger" (an original McCartney/Harrison tune) were recorded in Percy F. Phillips little studio in july or later that year and were played live into a single microphone. After, the recording was pressed onto the 10-inch shellac disc. This has passed to each member a week and finished with Duff Lowe – who kept it for 23 years! Astonishingly, Lowe kept the single in a sock drawer until 1981, when it was suggested to him that it may be worth something. It was valued by Sotheby's, and its existence was reported by Sunday Times journalist Stephen Pile. McCartney knowing about the treasure has called Lowe and bought the precious record. Eventually He´s made 50 copies to give to relatives and friends. It was eventually released, along with In Spite Of All The Danger, in 1995 on the Anthology 1 collection.
