My wife and I camped at Mt. Madonna this past week and we hiked up to the Miller home site ruins and explored them. It's obvious that it was an expensive and large structure. Hand cut stone blocks expertly mortared and keystone window frames and lots of concrete staircases. clearly a wealth of material was brought up probably by mule-drawn wagons to build the home.
Heinricht "Henry" Miller was a German immigrant to California in 1850. He had knowledge of beef farming and made his fortune selling beef. Miller eventually came to own over 1.25 million acres of land and 1 million head of cattle.
In 1875 he purchased land atop what is now known as Mount Madonna County Park for a summer home site. Prior to the home;s construction, his family lived in large swanky tents with carpets and all the amenities.
Henry's daughter Sarah was killed on Mt. Madonna. She was thrown by a horse and sustained a mortal wound head injury. After Henry's passing in 1916, the property was sold. The house burned down and the stone walls and concrete foundations are all that remain.
