In this video I build a pinhole viewer.
Welcome to Hangar77!
Hi, thanks for stopping by! With the 2017 Solar Eclipse rapidly approaching, I decided it was time to build a pinhole viewer. The pinhole viewer is very simple to build and allows you to look at the sun indirectly by projecting an image of the sun on the back end of the viewer. You can build pinhole viewers out of many things such as mailing tubes, cereal boxes or even pop can boxes! I first built a pinhole viewer out of one 12 pack box, then decided to try to make one out of five 12 pack boxes. Why would I do such a crazy thing you ask? To enlarge the size of the projected image! By increasing the size of the pinhole viewer from one box to five, I increased the size of the reflected image. This makes the image of the sun bigger and easer to see. The only down sides to this are the physical size of the pinhole viewer gets larger and it gets a little harder to focus. Nothing that can't be mastered with a bit of practice though!
Important things to remember when using Pinhole Viewers:
NEVER LOOK DIRRECTLY AT THE SUN!
NEVER LOOK THROUGH THE PINHOLE TOWARD THE SUN!
ONLY LOOK AT THE REFLECTED IMAGE OF THE SUN PROJECTED ON THE BACK OF THE PINHOLE VIEWER!
IF YOU LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE SUN YOU COULD SERIOUSLY DAMAGE YOUR EYES!
