"White Space" is a billboard I designed for the Black Outdoor Art project hosted by Brotherhood Media, in Shoreditch, London. The artwork speaks to issues of racial exclusion and systemic prejudice.
It visualises my experience as a black professional, walking into every office, agency, business or conference for 20 years, and rarely seeing another black face.
How we recruit and staff our organisations reflects our values. Our principles and culture. It’s how we tell the world who we are.
My mother always said that someone would always have to be the ‘first’. The first to work at a particular company, the first to break through some unseen barrier. My father was one of the first black stockbrokers to work in London’s financial district.
But what does that say about these spaces we’re constantly trying to get into? The access and validation we seek - the rooms we fight to be in. What message are we being told?
And what if we created our own spaces instead?
Black Outdoor Art is an initiative curated by myself, and hosted by outdoor & experiential agency Brotherhood Media. We use billboards donated by the agency as a platform, as a vehicle of expression for the Black British creative community. To communicate our truths, celebrate our diverse perspectives, and to shape our narratives.
