Transcript:
Amanda: Hang on, aren't amphibians supposed to be super swimmers?
Tim: Swimmers yes, super, not necessarily. Ery's body is hefty and stiff and her tail is short and stout. She can swim, but not in a strong or speedy way, especially in deep water.
Amanda: And Beelze? C'mon show us that classic underwater frog kick!
Tim: She's even worse – see her legs flailing? She can keep her head above the surface, but not for too long.
Amanda: Do we need to throw them some floaties?
Sounds: Cracking large splash
Tim: The trees did it for us! Beelze is climbing on to that fallen mangrove branch!
Amanda: Is it big enough to float the frog?
Tim: Yep! In fact, there's a theory that Beelze ended up in Madagascar after crossing the ocean on a raft.
Amanda: Wow! (Adopts pirate voice) Ahoy there, me hearty! I've been waiting to do my pirate voice again! Captain Beelze has taken the lead and has reached the mangroves!
Tim: Ery's getting closer, you've got to admire her chutzpah, she's refusing to give up!
Amanda: (Back to normal voice) Keep paddling Ery! You can body surf on this gentle wave!
Amanda: Uh oh…
Tim: Ery's stuck! She didn't see those submerged mangrove roots and she's got her head caught in between them – underwater! I guess, if anything was going to get stuck it was her melon – her name means drawn out face, or big head!
Amanda: Rude! Will Ery be able to breathe down there?
Tim: Generally adult amphibians breathe through their skin, but not Ery – she has lungs and stiff ribs, so she probably breathes by moving her mouth up and down to pump air into her body.
Amanda: So that's a no for breathing underwater?
Tim: I'm afraid so.
Amanda: She won't be able to hold her breath for much longer — Ery get out of there!
Tim: Push!
Amanda: Squeeze!
Tim: If only there were another creature in there to give her a little nudge.
Amanda: Like a kracken?
Tim: No!
Sounds: crunching wood
Amanda: She's out!
Tim: There's something down there that gave Ery the boost she needed to break free. Let's check the underwater cam.
Sounds: Camera clicks
Amanda: Whoa! It's teeming with fish!
Tim: Mangroves provide habitat for thousands of species.
Amanda: Like this one!?
Amanda and Tim: Stingray!
