Описание: Winters in Mussoorie have a charm of their own, and during this time, we explored the hill town through its food and the incredible people behind it. We did this journey with noted author Seema Smriti Hari ji, whose insights added a beautiful layer of context and depth to the experience.

We started our journey at The Tavern, one of Mussoorie’s oldest and most loved cafés. Steeped in history, this place has been a gathering spot for generations. We had the pleasure of meeting Sahni ji, whose warmth and knowledge made the experience even more special. On his recommendation, we tried the Pahadi bowl, pull-apart bread, and a unique ragi pizza, each dish reflecting a thoughtful blend of local flavours and modern sensibilities.

Our next stop was Chic Chocolate, a legendary name in Mussoorie. The old-world charm of the place is instantly comforting, and the generosity of the owner truly stood out. He insisted we try their Oreo coffee cheesecake, New York Cheesecake, Hazelnut Chocolate and peanut butter, all of which were delightful. Places like these are not just bakeries, they are part of the town’s identity.

We then headed to Cafe By The Way, which was wrapped in a festive Christmas vibe. Their signature hot chocolate was perfect for the weather. It was also wonderful getting to know Rajat ji’s journey and the thought behind the space. The team here also cares for around 12 stray dogs, a gesture that speaks volumes about their warmth and compassion.

Next, we visited Neelam Restaurant, a place defined by its legacy and heartfelt hospitality. Run by a family for over 75 years, this restaurant has welcomed generations of diners, including several well-known names. The father and son greeted us with such warmth and enthusiasm. Despite being a vegetarian himself, uncle passionately cooks non-vegetarian dishes for his guests. We tried brain masala, dal makhani, naan, chicken curry, and ended with a comforting fruit cream. Every dish felt deeply personal.

From there, we stopped by Papa Laphing, where a conversation with the owner’s mother revealed the inspiring story of how her daughter started and built this venture.

Our next stop was Bengali Sweets, an old and enchanting place where one can still find furniture and artefacts from the British era, making it a piece of living history. The sweets here carried a sense of tradition and nostalgia. We loved their rasmalai and singori which they make in limited numbers.

We also visited Delhi Sweet Shop, a true local hangout where people gather over chai and conversations. We tried their gulab jamun, and it absolutely lived up to its reputation.

We wrapped up our day back at The Tavern with a hot hot toddy and an amazing butter chicken, bringing the journey full circle.

This wasn’t just a food tour. It was about people, legacy, and the stories that continue to live on through food in Mussoorie.
