These lessons are designed for beginners or people with limited guitar knowledge, and use simple chord shapes as much as possible. They do not necessarily reflect the way the song was originally played. Information is provided for both right-handed and left-handed players.

The Only Exception uses tricky barre chords on the original recording, which are well outside of the capabilities of anybody just starting out on the guitar. This simplified arrangement uses a capo on fret 4 and easy open chords. An evil little F does appear towards the end, but you can still get through 95% of the song without it.

Take note of the unusual Cmaj7 shape used. By including your little finger on the 3rd fret of the high E string, as shown, the chord sounds much closer to the version used on the original recording.
