As you go through the story in Chapter 5, Kiryu will be forced to take part in bloodsport to get Majima's help to defend the Tojo Clan. After that, you can return to the Coliseum at any time to continue the fighting. If you've forgotten where the Coliseum is, you can find it in Underground Purgatory, on the south side of the main walkway about halfway along.

You'll start your fighting career at the bottom: Rank E. You increase your rank by fighting in tournaments and earning points. Points directly translate to your progress in the tournament, so the more you can get, the better your progress. At the outset, you'll have access to two tournaments, with more as your rank increases.

Tournaments themselves are, for the most part, simple one-on-one fights, and you have to win three fights in a row to win the tournament. Rules are specific to the tournament you pick, but the base rule set is as such:

You enter the tournament with the health and Heat you started with.
You will restore 10% of health when you defeat the first and second opponent.
There are two types of armaments rule sets:
Bare-handed: Only unarmed fighting is allowed. You can switch between any of your styles.
Weapons Allowed: You can use any weapons or gear that you want to bring with you, but you cannot change them once you enter the fight, so pick your three of each wisely.
You cannot use Items to restore your health.
If defeated, you will be ejected back to the coliseum door with one health. Furthermore, even if you win, you will not have your health restored, so make sure you heal up between tournaments if you need it.
At the end of a tournament, you'll be given points based on how well you did. These points are then applied to your rank, which will open up more difficult and more awesome fights. You get more points for doing things stylishly, including using Heat Actions, Extreme Heat Mode, Taunts, defeating the foe quickly, or by not taking damage.
Here are the ranks and the points you need for each one:

Rank D - 50,000

Rank C - 100,000

Rank B - 500,000

Rank A - 1,500,000

Rank S - 10,000,000
