SIR Voter List Controversy: 3 Crore Names Deleted in UP | Democracy at Risk?

Описание: Since the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process began, serious questions have repeatedly been raised about the credibility of the Election Commission of India. The controversy intensified after the Election Commission released the draft voter list for Uttar Pradesh. Following the SIR process, around 12 crore voters were included in the list, whereas earlier the state had nearly 15 crore voters. This means close to 3 crore names—around 18%—have been removed, a scale unmatched by any other state in the country.

The Election Commission claims that these names were deleted due to reasons such as death, change of residence, missing voters, or duplicate registrations. However, as soon as the draft list was made public, opposition leaders questioned the move. Congress leader Gurdeep Sappal and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav alleged that the names of genuine and eligible voters have also been removed.

The SIR process has sparked similar controversies in West Bengal. Notices have reportedly been sent to Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami, actor Dev, and even Nobel Prize–winning economist Amartya Sen. This has raised serious concerns about the seriousness and fairness of the process. When globally respected intellectuals receive such notices, it naturally leads to questions about institutional overreach.

Addressing a public rally, TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee accused the Election Commission of targeting citizens of Bengal under the guise of SIR. The larger question remains: Is the Election Commission compromising its neutrality, and can democracy survive if valid voters are systematically excluded?
