THEM MUSHROOMS
From the early 1970s, when vinyl still ruled living rooms and dance floors breathed dust under spinning feet, Them Mushrooms began a musical journey that refused to grow old. Their sound did not merely travel — it sailed across oceans, carrying with it melodies that settled into hearts far beyond Kenya’s borders. And then came the anthem — “Jambo Bwana” in the early ’80s — a song that bloomed like a sunrise and became a global handshake, forever stitching their name into the fabric of world music.
Rooted in the sensual sway of chakacha and the velvet glide of rhumba, them Mushrooms was born not in a boardroom, but in brotherhood — five brothers, bound by blood and rhythm, turning family harmony into national treasure. Their music became the soundtrack of celebration, their beats marching proudly through national public holidays, where crowds moved like one body under their spell.
When their journey found a home at the iconic Carnivore Restaurant, the stage became their second soil. From that fertile ground, the original unit branched into four performing outfits — all bearing the same name, Them Mushrooms — like shoots from a single musical tree, created to satisfy a demand that never seemed to sleep. Their tunes were not background noise; they were the main event, the pulse of evenings, the glue of gatherings.
At the helm in earlier years stood their elder brother, Teddy Kalanda Harrison — a Makerere University graduate whose leadership was both academic in polish and natural in rhythm. After his passing, the torch did not fall; it was caught mid-air by John Katana Harrison, who now steers the legacy forward, ensuring the flame burns just as bright.
GUMZO MTAANI sat face to face with John, peeling back the layers of history behind THEM MUSHROOMS — exploring not just where they have been, but what spirit drives them into tomorrow.
Follow the link and step into the story of these naturally gifted musicians, where brotherhood grew into cousins, and cousins into children — a living musical lineage — still doing what they have always known best: entertaining, uniting, and keeping the rhythm of a nation alive.
