Deze sonate behoort tot de zes triosonates voor orgel van Bach die door de loop van de tijd zijn uitgegroeid tot de absolute (en niet eenvoudige) hoogtepunten van het orgelrepertoire.

Dit Adagio vormt het langzame middendeel van de eerste sonate. In een triosonate zijn er altijd drie zelfstandige stemmen: twee bovenstemmen en een zelfstandige pedaalstem. Wat dit Adagio zo bijzonder maakt, is de intieme, bijna meditatieve sfeer. De muziek stroomt rustig en zangerig voort, alsof het een aria zonder woorden is.

De twee bovenstemmen bewegen zich sierlijk om elkaar heen. Ze imiteren elkaar soms, maar geven elkaar ook ruimte. Daaronder klinkt het pedaal als een rustige, dragende baslijn.

De toonsoort, c-klein, geeft het stuk een zachte ernst. Er zit een soort weemoed in. Bach gebruikt lange lijnen, subtiele versieringen en harmonieën die langzaam verschuiven. Daardoor ontstaat een gevoel dat de tijd even stil lijkt te staan.

The Adagio from the Trio Sonata No. 1 in E-flat major, BWV 525 by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750) is a remarkable and deeply moving movement. This sonata is one of Bach’s six trio sonatas for organ, works that over time have grown into absolute — and by no means easy — highlights of the organ repertoire.

This Adagio forms the slow middle movement of the first sonata. In a trio sonata there are always three independent voices: two upper voices and an independent pedal part. What makes this Adagio so special is its intimate, almost meditative atmosphere. The music flows calmly and lyrically, as if it were an aria without words.

The two upper voices move gracefully around one another. At times they imitate each other, yet they also give each other space. Beneath them, the pedal sounds as a calm, sustaining bass line.

The key of C minor gives the piece a gentle gravity. There is a sense of wistfulness. Bach writes long, flowing lines, subtle ornamentation, and harmonies that shift gradually. As a result, a feeling emerges that time itself seems to stand still for a moment.
