"The Bascom Affair: How One Mistake Ignited the Apache Wars"
In the spring of 1861, Lt. George Bascom, fresh out of West Point, would meet with the Apache warrior Cochise in what was supposed to be a peace talk. But, Bascom intended to arrest Cochise for horse thievery, and for the kidnapping of a young farmboy named Felix Ward.
But Cochise was, in fact, innocent of these crimes. He was a Chiricahua Apache, while the guilty party were a group of Coyotero, a neighboring band. And so, Cochise had protested Bascom’s attempt to arrest him, and managed to escape into the surrounding forest.
But, in his escape, Cochise had been forced to leave behind his wife and two young children, as well as his brother and two fellow Apache warriors. And now, Lt. Bascom intended to use them as bargaining chips against the legendary warrior.
Cochise, however, had other plans. He managed to return to his village, where he assembled a group of incensed Chiricahua warriors. From here, they returned to Apache Pass, intending to take back their fellow Chiricahua by any means necessary.
