US Treasury Bills, otherwise known as T-Bills, are short term government issued debt obligations. This means that you are lending money to the US Treasury in return for high interest rates and tax benefits. These bills have maturity dates of one year or less.
For higher net worth individuals, these T-Bills can be great options as large, liquid cash investments still backed by the US government. Additionally, the interest earned is exempt from state and local taxes. Currently, these bills pay between 2.5 and 3.5% interest and are likely to increase in the near future (as of September 2022).
Bank CDs are another great alternative that are often more convenient and accessible. You can lock up your money for a planned duration and earn a much higher interest rate than you would with a traditional savings account. These currently pay a bit lower at 2 to 3%, but the customer service provided by banks can be better than going through TD.
