This chapter is included in the Cultural Studies course of the M A English Programme of Calicut University. It discusses the need of shifting from Eurocentrism to Polycentrism.
This video dives deep into the concept of Eurocentrism, exploring how the "East vs. West" divide isn't a geographical fact but a fictional story written by power.
We'll deconstruct the very idea of "The West," showing how it's a political and cultural construct, not a fixed place. We'll also uncover the "borrowed progress" of Europe—revealing how its greatest milestones, like the Renaissance and the Enlightenment, were built on centuries of African, Semitic, and Islamic cultural mixing.
Finally, we explore the shadow of colonialism and the logic of racism (as defined by Albert Memmi) that were used to justify domination, and we propose a new, more just way of seeing the world: Polycentrism.
