Lake Lanier: The Truth Behind the Low Water

In this short documentary, experts from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District explain how Lake Lanier operates as a critical reservoir within the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint (ACF) River Basin. While many visitors know the lake as a place for recreation, it also plays a vital role in supporting drinking water, maintaining water quality, generating hydropower, and sustaining communities and ecosystems downstream.

Lake Lanier holds more than 60 percent of the water stored in the entire ACF system. During wetter periods, the reservoir stores water. During drier periods, that stored water is released to support downstream needs across multiple states.

Lower water levels can reveal more shoreline and expose hazards such as rocks and submerged stumps, which is why visitors are encouraged to slow down, stay alert, and prioritize safety while enjoying the lake.

Through interviews with park rangers, engineers, water managers, and district leadership, this documentary provides insight into how the Corps manages Lake Lanier using data, forecasts, and coordinated system operations to meet the needs of people, wildlife, and the environment.
