Today, I want to address a transformative shift in my assessment approach, which once consumed two to four hours of my time. Now, I assess infrequently, but why? My focus has pivoted to compliance, the cornerstone of active participation. So, I ask you all: What captures your focus? What problem burns within you to be solved? Begin with that inquiry.
Often, the path will be fraught with issues — limitations in motion, muscle tension, joint problems, and disrupted movement patterns. Yet, this is where true investment lies. By aligning with the needs of those we serve, we transition from selling our ideas to solving their problems. Never dampen their interest or discourage participation, but rather, assist them.
Consider the client who feels 'pretty good.' Traditional wisdom might suggest starting with an assessment, but I suggest otherwise. We get them moving first with exercises like supine bridges. But watch closely — if they're shifting to one side, it's not just a movement; it's a revelation, an assessment in itself.
When we stagger their stance, elevating one leg, we're not just varying their workout; we're assessing their ability to shift and balance their center of mass. This isn't just an exercise; it's a learning experience that builds sensory motor competence without needing to inundate them with technical jargon.
And when they're unsure of their movement desires, we return to the essentials: deadlifts, squats, rotations. As they execute, we observe, and we adapt, providing the sensory feedback to bring balance to their movement.
Now, to the crux of the matter: documentation. Logging these variations is not mere record-keeping; it's a quest for knowledge. It's about being curious, testing, and expanding our toolbox of assessments. With each log, our understanding deepens, and our principles for creating personalized movement become clearer and more intuitive.
This is not just about movement; it's about understanding the human condition and fostering compliance through empathy and tailored solutions. So, I leave you with this: Focus on the individuals you serve, help them solve their problems, and watch your assessments transform from a procedure into a partnership.
