Child Psychotherapist, Christina, shares how the brain develops during childhood and what that may look like for foster children. As a foster carer, it's very important to be able to understand what is going on in the brain of a foster child.
Seemingly inappropriate behaviour or 'aggressive' behaviour is often the result of fear which was established early in life following childhood trauma.
When the brain responds to fear, the amygdala resorts to a programmed safety response. This can look like fight, flight, freeze, flop or friend. Christina explains the 'five F's' and how these may present in looked after children.
She also covers how best to respond when a foster child's amygdala is 'firing'.
