Many people drive past the home of the Milwaukee Brewers and notice what looks like a haunted mansion in the distance but have no idea what it is. It happens to be a huge part of American history and its story will be told on Milwaukee PBS in an upcoming documentary called "A Hallowed Home For Heroes."
The Milwaukee Soldiers Home is a National Historic Landmark with origins that trace back to President Abraham Lincoln’s last legislative act and an overlooked group of young women who were clearly feminists before their time. The hour-long documentary, which will air in November, will tell the story of the iconic institution, from the women founders of the late 1800s to the homeless veterans who now live on campus in Old Main — the gothic tower seen from the freeway.
*** This edition includes updated information on the continuing restorations of buildings on the Milwaukee County grounds. ***
The film also follows the Tubesing family as they revisit the grounds they grew up on in 1950s and '60s when their father became one of the Home’s chaplains. Civil War experts, preservationists who led the recent restoration effort, veterans of various generations and historian John Gurda share insight on why Milwaukee Soldiers Home is so much more than a bunch of beautiful old buildings.
