There are runs where you chase pace — and there are runs where you build something deeper.
This 30km endurance session through the Waitākere Ranges was about building strength, resilience, and race-specific preparation. Linking five trails into one continuous effort, I stacked up around 1,500 metres of elevation gain over 5 hours and 23 minutes — in 27°C summer heat.
Starting from the Karamatura Track, climbing toward Mount Donald McLean, flowing along Puriri Ridge Track and Omanawanui Track, out to Whatipu and back to Huia — this route delivers relentless stairs, sustained climbs, exposed gravel road, and some of the most spectacular coastal views in Auckland.
I carried full mandatory ultra gear (approx. 5kg including 3L of fluids), practising real race-day conditions:
2L electrolytes + 1L water
No water sources on route
Salt tablets for heat management
Energy bars for controlled fuelling
Headlamp packed for safety
This run was part of my preparation for the Tarawera Ultramarathon, but the lessons apply to any marathon or ultramarathon:
✔ Train with the gear you’ll race with
✔ Practise hydration strategy in heat
✔ Build climbing strength on tired legs
✔ Learn to pace for 5+ hours
✔ Respect elevation

The Waitākeres were formed from ancient volcanic activity millions of years ago — and you feel that history in every climb. Steep ridgelines, deep valleys, black sand coastline shaped by the Tasman Sea. It’s one of the best places in New Zealand to build real mountain endurance.
Finished just as the sun was setting — and stepped straight into the ocean at Huia for recovery.
Endurance isn’t built on race day.
It’s built on long, honest training days like this.
