Sri Mallikeshwarar Temple, Mannadi, Chennai is also known as Mallikarjunar temple and is devoted to Bhagwan Shiva in the form of Mallikeshwarar and Devi Parvathi in the form of Maragadhambal.
According to temple sthala purana, once a Chola king while passing by this area found a bunch of Jasmine shrubs. And the king ordered his soldiers to clear up the weeds nearly and create a beautiful garden around the Jasmine shrubs. While this was being done, they discovered a Shiva Lingam buried under the sand. Hence the place got its name Mannadi (meaning beneath the sand in Tamizh).
