A man is using what time he has left to raise awareness about the financial and emotional toll ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, has on families.
Benton Harbor native Jim Willard was diagnosed in 2023 and was told he had just two years to live.
Over time, ALS patients lose the ability to move, speak and eventually breathe.
According to Willard, he avoided treatment because he thought he knew his fate, but later found support through the Susan Mast ALS Foundation.
The non-profit serves all of West Michigan.
It's where he met 28-year-old Rowyn Wilke, who was diagnosed at just 21.
"I hate what's happening to me, but I've had a good life. I've had the chance to have all these these wonderful experiences, and having Rowyn show up made me want to hug her," said Jim Willard, battling Lou Gehrig's.
Together, they’ve launched a Give-Butter campaign to raise money for the foundation.
