Data about the risks and impacts of extreme weather are often missing from poorer neighbourhoods, making it hard to predict when dangerous flooding may occur. Researchers have developed a community-generated data approach that plugs the data gap and empowers residents to take protective action and save lives.
The team’s work, led by João Porto de Albuquerque, Professor in Urban Analytics at the University of Glasgow, was the winner of the Outstanding Societal Impact Prize in the ESRC Celebrating Impact Prize 2023. The prize, now in its 11th year, is an annual opportunity to recognise the success of ESRC-funded researchers in achieving and enabling outstanding economic or societal impact from their research.
