Watch and learn the secrets of the Canyon Creek Ice Caves!
Formed around 300 million years ago the Canyon Creek Ice Cave in Kananaskis bears fossils, intricate limestone formations, alluring frozen features, and stunning views of the Canyon Creek valley. There once was a warm shallow sea in the area where marine life thrived and perished becoming compacted limestone, then becoming mountains. To this day there remains ice in the cave.
A short drive from Calgary that brings you past Bragg Creek on highway 66 will take you to the "Ing's Mine" parking lot. From there a quick hike of 7 kilometers will bring you to the ice caves which can mostly be travelled on bike.
The cave extends over 200 meters in depth and has a crawls, squeezes, and climbs. Bring a headlamp, warm clothing, snacks, and I recommend a helmet because of rockfall. The cave is mostly accessible through-out the year but may be prime avalanche territory in mid-winter.
Have you gone to the ice cave's? How was your adventure? Did we miss any features?
