On April 1, 1970, Specialist Fourth Class Peter Lemon was just 19 years old and stationed at Fire Support Base Illingworth in Tây Ninh Province, South Vietnam. That night, after smoking marijuana to help himself sleep, he would face nearly 400 North Vietnamese Army soldiers in one of the most vicious firefights of the Vietnam War.
Born in Toronto, Canada, Lemon had immigrated to Michigan as a child and volunteered for the U.S. Army out of patriotic fervor. But the reality of Vietnam shattered his idealism. By 1970, he was just another disillusioned soldier counting down the days until he could go home.
When the NVA attacked at 2:17 AM, Lemon's machine gun jammed. Then his rifle jammed. He fought back with hand grenades until they ran out. Then he killed enemy soldiers with his bare hands. Wounded three times, he refused evacuation until his more seriously wounded comrades were airlifted to safety.
In 1971, President Richard Nixon presented Lemon with the Medal of Honor. One week later, Lemon admitted to The New York Times that he had been high on marijuana during the entire battle.
This is the incredible true story of Peter Lemon — the only Canadian-born American to receive the Medal of Honor for service in Vietnam, and one of the most extraordinary tales of courage, survival, and brutal hand-to-hand combat in U.S. military history.
