The cosmic microwave background (CMB) is the faint afterglow of the Big Bang, filling the universe with a
n early uniform glow of microwave radiation . Discovered by Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson in 1965, this
signal provided landmark evidence for the Big Bang theory . While the CMB appears extremely smooth
(the same in all directions to about one part in 100,000), sensitive instruments have detected tiny
temperature variations – imprints of primordial density fluctuations in the early universe . These slight
irregularities are the acoustic signatures of the early universe: traces of sound waves that rippled through
the hot plasma of the young cosmos. By studying these patterns, scientists can learn about the universe’s
composition, shape, and how it has evolved over time.
