Today’s tutorial is all about loosening up and trying new things. After Day 1's quince study, I wanted to build on that with a other simple still-life. I found these funny little fruits that look like apples in the shape of pears so naturally, I’ve christened them "papples".
This session was great fun as there was a lot of experimentation and I quite like the results! A few highlights:
Finger painting! I can’t believe how satisfying this was. It’s fast and fun and a great way to blend colours directly on the surface.
Medium experiments: Mediums dilute or amend the oil paint to make it more workable...I tried linseed oil vs. Sansodor and Sansodor won by a mile for me. It feels like it melts the pigment in the loveliest way, whereas linseed oil seems to spread it out more. If you’re curious about how each behaves, I talk through the differences in the tutorial.
Palette knife fun! I used the knife to scrape back areas and then add chunky marks on the wooden surface. It creates such a rough, tactile texture — perfect for a rustic wooden top.
I left it somewhat unrefined and came back to it after a week or two once it had dried so I could experiment some more with mixed media! I'd heard you can add different mediums on the top of oils so I finished it off with soft pastels, pastel pencils, and coloured charcoal.
I do love doing these challenges: it's a great way of experimenting and discovering new ways of working. I hope you enjoy painting along with me — and try a bit of finger painting yourself!
Thank you, as always, for being here and supporting these creative experiments! Do let me know in the comments or the Patreon chat, how you get on if you have a go yourself.
