Описание: Bergamo’s Upper Town (Città Alta) is one of the most fascinating destinations in Lombardy, a place where history, culture, and breathtaking views blend into a unique experience.
Perched on seven hills and protected by the Venetian Walls, it is easily reachable by funicular. Surrounded by the embrace of the Venetian Walls, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and immersed in the Parco dei Colli, a 4700-hectare green area, Città Alta is the historic core of Bergamo.
You can reach it on foot, starting from the modern Lower Town, climbing romantic stone staircases that ascend the hillsides, or break through the walls with the funicular that, for over 100 years, has been traveling up and down with its carriages.
Piazza Vecchia and the Campanone
You will walk along the Corsarola, the main street that crosses all of Città Alta. Along the way, you will arrive at Piazza Vecchia, the central core of the village, a perfect harmony of solids and voids.
At the center is the famous Contarini Fountain, with its sphinxes—one facing the neoclassical building of the Mai Library and the other facing the Palazzo della Ragione—representing reason and knowledge, man’s resources in facing life’s challenges.
Rising above the Palazzo del Podestà is the Campanone, the Civic Tower, which you can climb for a breathtaking view. Every evening at 10 p.m., the ritual of 100 tolls marks the time when the Bergamaschi were called to return through the four gates that open in the Venetian Walls, which were promptly closed.
Walking
For walking enthusiasts, Bergamo Alta can be reached on foot starting from the modern Lower Town. Through characteristic medieval streets that gradually climb the hill, it is the perfect option for those who want to fully immerse themselves in the city’s atmosphere, offering suggestive views at every turn.
