Meteor Crater, also known as "Barringer Meteor Crater", is a meteorite impact crater in the Arizona desert, ~ 40 miles east of Flagstaff. People initially thought the crater had been caused by volcanic eruptions as the famous San Francisco volcanic field is only about 40 miles to the west. Meteor crater is claimed to be the best preserved meteorite crater on Earth.
The crater is about 3900ft/1200m wide and 560ft/170m deep. The rim rises about 150ft/45m above surrounding plains. Research suggest the impact happened about 50000 years ago and released energy equal to about 10 million tons of TNT (~150 atomic bombs). The meteorite was a nickel-iron meteorite and was mostly vaporized during the impact.
In 1903, mining engineer and businessman Daniel M. Barringer purchased the land of the crater, hoping to find (what he thought) the remaining meteorite fragments with iron ore that worth over a billion 1903 dollars. He spent 27 years and roughly 7 million 2017 dollars, trying to locate the meteoric iron. He drilled to a depth of 1375ft/419m but no significant deposit was ever found. At that time, people just didn't know the meteorite had been mostly vaporized. The crater remains privately owned by the Barringer family.
