The structures are monumental. Two colossal units, clearly mobile platforms, stand silent in the haze. Their designation as 'walkers' is perhaps too simple. They are towering, six-legged habitats, or perhaps mobile factories, their rusted carapace the color of dried blood. They dwarf the landing modules left by the prior, unnamed expedition. The sense of scale here is overwhelming; one is forced to contemplate the sheer mechanical power of a civilization that built these. And then abandoned them.

There is a grim silence. No wind, save for the infrequent, unsettling scrape of the Vapor Caelus against the metal. The planet is neotenic. The flora—if the scattered, faint cyan and turquoise phosphorescent crusts on the cracked earth can be called such—are minimal, surviving in tiny pockets where the mineral-rich dust has gathered. The mineralogical analysis confirms a high concentration of ferrous and nickel silicates, but also trace elements of a crystalline structure I cannot yet identify. It pulses with a faint, internal light, like a residual energy.

I have spent an hour simply observing the lower joints of the nearest Walker. The articulation systems are complex, suggesting a need for traversal over extremely difficult, perhaps seismic, terrain. It is a technological relic, a silent testament to a forgotten purpose. It is a lonely place, and the thought that I am, for the moment, the only sentient organism in this massive basin, gives me pause. It is a beauty born of desolation.
