A complete guide to drafting in mega draft
Strategy
Hello! With the mega draft royal tournament coming up, I thought it's a great time to make a post on some strategies on my favourite mode and for once something with a bit more effort. The post will focus on the deck picking part.
1. It's a game of countering your opponent and not getting countered
Avoid egiant and MK since there is a pekka on the board. In case opponent took AQ: try to pick lightning or a monk. In my opinion countering your opponent's picks is the biggest priority in this game mode. Even more than making a deck that has synergy or meta cards.
You can literally see what they are building. You can forget versatility against other decks when building a deck. For example picking 2 mini tanks against a MK is fine if you feel like you need it.
Especially in your wincon choice, choose the wincon that has no hard counters on the board. If you pick a gy, don't run into a motherwitch.
2. Deck synergy by planning ahead
I could talk about strong synergies like nado + splash troops infinitely, but the main thing is that you should take cards that work well with the wincon/strategy that you will pick later. The rest relies on game knowledge and experience.
Almost no deck you build will be 100% meta, but already in pick 2-3 you should have ideas like "ok I will try to make a bait deck since there is no barb barrel on the board and I have log myself".
3. Taking counters away from a card to pick it
Taking lightning and queen. Log and goblins. Fireball and magic archer. Combos like these are typically very strong. This is why taking the right spells is also very critical. The logic can obviously be expanded on any troops but with spells it's easiest to see and apply in the short time. A defensive card that can't be killed cheaply or at all is usually a game winner.
Any card that counters a lot of the board is very valuable to pick.
4. Take wincons late and not too many
Winconditions are typically very easy to counter and they lock you into a plan more than other cards. Don't be the guy who takes balloon first pick. Only to find out that the opponent has every balloon killer possible when the match starts.
There are of course exceptions, if the board just happens to have 0 counters to some wincon, but that's rare and for some wincons like balloon it will never happen since there are always anti-air and buildings.
You do need one wincon at least so don't forget about it if you are going to pick it late. But I would suggest picking wincons in pick 6-8 most of the time.
5. There is a minimeta for every card, don't be afraid to make unconventional picks sometimes
The only card that I never saw used even at competitive games is like healer (even egolem was used successfully in $15k AMG cup). The point is, don't be afraid to take a wizard if the situation calls for it. Or a pump if there is no good spells against it. Creativity gets rewarded.
6. I looked through the AMG cup tournament where pros went head to head in mega draft. Some useful stats.
Top absolute FIRST picks: Log (9 times), Queen (6), Goblins (3), Zappies, Poison, GK (2), many others at (1).
Imo the first pick or two are way easier to make if you know what to focus on. Generally pro players liked to first pick either strong spells, cycle cards, champions or single target range troops that didn't have a good spell counter on the board. I think archers would be on popular first picks after the buff.
Miner was the only wincon that got first picked once (miner imo is a good first pick usually). Most wincons were picked in picks 6-8. No one took a building on first pick.
Champions pick rate: Monk (21 times), AQ (15), GK (12), Mighty (10), SK (8). No champions 10 times.
Monk pick rate might surprise you. Biggest reason was to counter the queen meta, but since monk just got buffed we can expect it to be very good in mega draft in general. Champion pickrate was very high (87%). So it is usually a good idea to have one.
Royaleapi stats are also very useful. All the cards in mega draft with 53-54%+ winrate are usually good options, AKA. options to take when you are unsure with the clock on like 3 seconds. We've all been there.
7. How the board in mega draft is formed (helps to quickly find different cards so you can pick in time)
I figured these out with the help of royaleapi's categories for normal draft because similar categories are also used in mega draft for the most part. Some like "champions" are obvious, while others not completely.
Cards can be in one or more categories. Miner for example is in tank units, wincons and minitanks meaning he can appear in a few different places on the board. Every card in the game is in this game mode except for mirror and clone.
