As of Monday morning, January 12, the National Weather Service in Reno reported that upper elevations (above 7,000 feet) have received between 120 to 150 inches (10 to 12.5 feet) of fresh snow. Even at lake level (6,225 feet), accumulation has surpassed 60 inches, burying vehicles and blocking first-floor windows in residential areas of South Lake Tahoe and Incline Village. Several natural avalanches have already been reported on the slopes of Mt. Rose and near Emerald Bay, the latter resulting in the temporary closure of Highway 89. Approximately 15,000 residents across El Dorado and Douglas counties are currently without power as heavy snow-laden branches snapped onto utility lines. With over 5 feet of snow on rooftops, the risk of structural collapse is increasing, especially as the snow begins to settle and gain weight. Meanwhile, The high-altitude corridor of Stateline, where the neon lights of Nevada’s casinos meet the alpine slopes of California, has been transformed into an unrecognizable white wilderness. As of Monday morning, Stateline has recorded 88 inches (7.3 feet) of snow at lake level, while the higher elevations near the Stagecoach and Boulder lodges of Heavenly Mountain Resort have reported over 135 inches. For the residents of Stateline and the adjacent South Lake Tahoe, this storm is a test of grit. Long-time locals are accustomed to "Sierra Cement," but the 2026 storm’s sheer volume is forcing even the most prepared to call for help.
