The Zakspeed Zk881 seen in testing at Misano differs from the '87 car only in terms of aerodynamic refinement made possible by lower radiant masses. The team is looking forward to an '88 season of declared transition.
MISANO – From the mists of Germany to the sea and sun of the Adriatic Riviera: it is a classic that legions of Germans have never been able to resist. Not even Zakspeed can resist the subtle charm of Misano in winter, having always chosen the Santamonica racetrack for its first outing of the season since the birth of its first F1 single-seater. Last week, the Saarbrucken team arrived in Italy: it was time to take the first steps with the newly created Zk881 and, with all the snow that had fallen on the Hockenheim and Nürburgring circuits, it was better to play it safe and rely on the certainly better conditions in Misano. Hopes were dashed. On the Adriatic coast, where a series of tests had been scheduled from Tuesday (8) to Thursday (10) last week, the sun and heat were almost nowhere to be seen. On the first day (8), it was bitterly cold and there was even a risk of rain, so much so that the tests had to be suspended shortly after mid-afternoon. On the second day (9), it was just as cold, with a slight improvement in the early afternoon, but the car was stuck in the pits with a broken engine and out of time for repairs, preventing the two bored drivers, Ghinzani and Schneider, from doing a few more laps. Fortunately, the situation improved on Thursday (10), when the two drivers were able to take to the track without any more problems warming up their tyres. And on Thursday, of course, the best time of the session was set: 1m07.'40 set by Ghinzani at the end of a series of fast laps (72 in three days), not aimed at setting the fastest time at all costs but at testing both the new engine fitted the previous evening and some aerodynamic solutions - spoiler and rear wing - and suspension settings. In all honesty, there was nothing more to test.
