Mark visits Lloyd Ashley in his jail cell. Lloyd offers Mark half of his four million dollars if Mark can get him acquitted. They discuss the implications of such a deal, with Lloyd pointing out that since Tom Ward is dead, Mark is the only one who knows about his financial affairs. Lloyd writes out a note agreeing to the deal, and they exchange a handshake, solidifying their corrupt arrangement.
