Acceptance Speech for the 2019 Koizumi Prize: Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Min-On Concert Series "Musical Voyage Along the Silk Road"
The Min-On Concert Association was awarded the 31st annual Fumio Koizumi Prize for Ethnomusicology in 2019 (with the ceremony held in 2021). The award states that Min-On was chosen as a recipient "In recognition of its contribution towards making not only researchers but also many people aware of the musics of various ethnic groups, especially of Asian ones, and making people familiar with such musics through a huge number of concerts and field surveys."
This video recounts the story of Min-On's early work and collaborations with pioneering ethnomusicologist Fumio Koizumi in the 1970s, toward the development of a concert series highlighting the Silk Road and cultural exchange between "East" and "West." This work included several research trips to Pakistan, Nepal, India, Mongolia, the Soviet Union, and the Republic of Uzbekistan, as well as organizing performances of musicians from these regions in Japan.
