This mini-documentary about the Chanticleer restaurant in ’Sconset was produced for the 2008 exhibition ’Sconset 02564 at the Nantucket Whaling Museum. It includes excerpts from a series of oral histories of ’Sconset residents conducted by the NHA in 1976 along with archival video and photos on the topic.
In this video, Gibbs Penrose (1908–76) talks about the original Chanticleer as a tea room and how the actors often patronized the establishment. Billy Baldwin (1903–84) tells of it first owner, actor Agnes Everitt. Joan Pennock Craig (1920–2011) ate their often on a meal plan offered by the boarding houses. Bob Longley (1932–2013) remembers that it was run by the Wiley family offering good simple food. And Nan Dempster Longley (1934–) remembers a late-night arrival by her hungry family when the Wiley’s made them scrambled eggs and bacon although the restaurant was closed.
