Hello, I'm Robert Olivier from CompostMania and I helped develop the BioPod™ Plus.
Today, we are going to show you how insects can be used to eat our food waste. This new powerful concept of composting is called grub composting, and we effectively Bio-Convert Food Waste into Insect Protein ALL within hours.
This Presentation was originally put together for Will Allen at Growing Power and is made available for free on the internet in smaller segments.
So Let's take a look inside a Grub Composter.
Thanks to Stefan Diener at the Swiss Federal Institute for Environmental Science & Technology (Eawag),
we get a time lapsed glimpse of what Thousands of grubs can do with 2 fish in just 1 day.
Normally it would take weeks for these 2 fish to decompose, but given enough grubs it becomes a matter of hours. Notice the timer on the bottom. We are only 4 hours into the decomposition process.
...
Aren't the ravenous?
...
The amazing thing is this really doesn't smell like any other compost bin. If I throw in spaghetti sauce, it smells like spaghetti sauce. Or in this case fish. But because everything is shredded and eaten within hours, the entire process completes itself before the noxious odors can build up.
This is how nature recycles. Amino Acids doesn't always have to break down into nitrogen rich compost.
Instead the most valuable nutrients are Up-cycled within a day. Into fresh new complex proteins and fats. Imagine if we could harvest these grubs daily in a convenient matter. There are all kinds of things we can do with a nutrient rich animal feed.
That's why we developed the BioPod™ Plus, as a means to create protein from waste.
As we now Waste over 1400 Calories per day per person in the United States.
The Solution to our food waste has to be rapid and inexpensive.
Furthermore, a scalable solution that can be placed directly near a home, restaurant or farm will minimize the need for transportation.
All we need is organic waste under the right conditions and we will be able to produce proteins, lots of cheap proteins.
1 square foot of grubcomposting can handle up to 3 lbs of food waste a day. That's over 1100 lbs of food waste a year. Of which an estimated protein content within the food waste os over 100 lbs.
This could produce up to 190 lbs of grubs a year, of which the protein content is about 35 lbs a year.
So, 1 square foot of grub composting produces up to 35 lbs of protein a year. remarkable, if you think that only a productive acre of soy planted can produce up to 350 lbs of protein a year.
what we are doing with one square foot, would take up 1/10 of an acre of soy.
that's what I call nutrient recovery.
and you can feed:
chickens
fish
reptiles
or even blend it into all kinds of animal feeds.
