Imagine you're a scientist trying to identify different types of bacteria, just like a detective solving a mystery. You use a special technique called Gram staining, which helps you see bacteria in two different colors—purple and pink—under a microscope.

First, you take a sample of bacteria and put it on a glass slide. Then, you stain it with a deep purple dye called crystal violet. After that, you add iodine, which acts like a fixer to lock the color in. But here comes the trick! You wash it with alcohol or acetone. Some bacteria hold onto the purple color tightly, while others let go of it. To make the second group visible, you add a pink dye called safranin.

Now, when you look under the microscope:

Purple bacteria (Gram-positive) have a thick wall that holds onto the purple stain.

Pink bacteria (Gram-negative) have a thinner wall that lets go of the purple and takes up the pink stain instead.

This simple but powerful method helps doctors and scientists figure out what kind of bacteria they're dealing with and how to treat infections effectively.
