For decades in Sweden, truck drivers did not ask what fuel their engine needed. Gasoline. Diesel. Kerosene. Even crude oil. They poured it in, and the engine ran. But that engine shouldn't have existed. It broke the rules of combustion. It threatened billions in fuel and engine investments. Its creator was Jonas Hesselman. And after it worked, the industry quietly made sure you never heard about it.
But to understand why one engine could threaten an entire industry, you have to see the world Jonas Hesselman was trying to fix. In the early 1900s, engines were prisoners of their fuel. Gasoline engines burned gasoline. Diesel engines burned diesel. There was no crossover, no flexibility, no choice. The problem was economics. Refineries produced multiple grades of fuel from crude oil. Light fractions became gasoline—expensive and refined. Heavy fractions became diesel and fuel oils—cheaper but thick and difficult to ignite. If you owned a gasoline engine, you paid premium prices even when cheap heavy oil sat unused. If you wanted cheap fuel, you needed a diesel engine. But diesels in the 1920s were massive, heavy beasts designed for ships and stationary power. For a truck or bus, a diesel added hundreds of pounds of dead weight.
