Welcome to "the world's coolest street."

This tourist hotspot in Rio de Janeiro was recently given the title by Time Out Magazine, thanks to its quirky stores and unique atmosphere.

Rua do Senado offers visitors everything from lively bars and restaurants to antique and craft shops.

"Very good, it has lots of groove, lots of people, very nice, it seems very authentic," says Sol Roberts, a tourist from Argentina.

"There's a great variety of things to buy, to drink and to eat," adds Vital Gigan, who is also from Argentina.

This popular bar called Armazem do Senado is owned by Fernando Magalhães and his brother.

It's been in the family for 40 years.

He says music has been key to creating the street's cool vibe.

"When my father bought this place in 1985 there were stores all around but they all closed and only we remained. Now we have started with samba and commerce is coming back, so it is revitalizing the area. That is very good," says Magalhães.

As the samba band plays, more people begin entering the bar.

"The public at all levels likes the atmosphere which welcomes all without discrimination. The word then spreads and the place starts filling up with people. This is the situation today, we are now considered the coolest street in the world," says samba singer Luiz Porto.

On Saturdays, the street is closed to vehicles and the fun begins.

Shops are packed with unique objects and vintage pieces.

"It's the world's coolest street of all of them. I've just arrive and I can confirm it," says Spanish tourist Esperanza Alba.

In recent years, many new restaurants and bars have opened.

The Tiny Labuta bar makes hundreds of caipirinha cocktails using freshly cut green lemons and cachaça or vodka.

Maia Hawashi works fast to meet the demand.

"It's a street that gathers all tribes, all ages, all ethnicities and races. I think that is why it was selected," she says.

Culture came back to this formerly run-down commercial area when some antique shops started playing music at night.

Rio Scenarium was one of the first and is the most successful.

It no longer sells or rents its antiques but keeps them as an exhibit of local history.
