Imagine you’re Trajan, emperor of Rome, and you want to spread the word about your great victory over the Dacian territories!
Of course you’d show Dacians all over Rome’s monuments – it’s the perfect imperial propaganda!
But did you know that the eight statues on the Arch of Constantine represent Dacian warriors and are also reused sculptures from the time of Emperor Trajan?
Check out this 3D model we recently built for the Arch of Constantine - Rome!
Positioned on top of each column, these imposing Dacian figures frame a brilliant ensemble of reliefs taken from earlier imperial monuments, including eight large panels from a lost monument of Marcus Aurelius that show the emperor returning to Rome, addressing the troops, sacrificing, and granting largesse.
Additional attic reliefs from Trajan’s Dacian Wars and the long Constantinian frieze narrating the march on Verona, the Battle of the Milvian Bridge, and Constantine’s solemn entry into Rome turn the arch into a stone storyboard of conquest and divine-backed rule.
The incredible richness of this sculptural program lets us “read” shifting artistic styles from the 2nd to the 4th century, as well as the political message that aligns Constantine with the “good emperors” of Rome’s golden age. Together, the Dacian statues and layered reliefs make the Arch of Constantine not just a commemorative gateway, but a three-dimensional history book carved in marble.
