Turner Classic Movies and Bonhams auctioneers Bonhams are holding an auction of rare movie memorabilia at the 2013 TCM Classic Film Festival.
TCM is a Peabody-award winning network presenting uncut, commercial-free, classic films from the largest film libraries in the world.
A portion of the proceeds will go to The Film Foundation, which is dedicated to protecting and preserving motion picture history.
Bonhams auctioneer Catherine Williamson said: "One of the things that Turner Classic Movies really wanted to do was curate an auction that appealed to a broad range of fans. So we have the high ticket items that are really the marquee pieces, but we've got a lot of things for other folks as well."
The famous 1940 Buick Phaeton Limited 81C convertible, which served as a backdrop for the ending of Casablanca, will cross the auction block in New York on November 25.
Casablanca's ending is widely considered one of the most memorable in film history, and Bonhams estimates that the car will fetch as much as $500,000 (€362,000): "The car was bought by Warner Brothers in 1940, and was part of their studio fleet of cars, and so not only did it appear in 'Casablanca,' it appeared in 'High Sierra' and a few other movies as well," Williamson explained. "But most famously in 'Casablanca.'"
Famous names such as Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman and Claude Rains starred in the film and their lines, such as "We'll always have Paris," are still quoted today.
Prior to the "What Dreams Are Made Of" auction, Bonhams will present special preview exhibits of items from the sale. Overall, the event brings more than 300 items to the block, from the silent era to the time of the modern blockbuster.
Among the items in the auction are an Elizabethan gown made for Gwyneth Paltrow in 'Shakespeare in Love'; outfits worn by Steve McQueen in his numerous film roles; and some of the costumes worn by Jack Nicholson and Michael Keaton in the Batman series of films.
