The Battle of El Carmen (November 10–16, 1934) stands as one of the most decisive and brilliantly executed operations of the Chaco War.
Commanded by General José Félix Estigarribia, the Paraguayan Army carried out a strategic breakthrough followed by a double envelopment, encircling and annihilating two entire Bolivian reserve divisions.
With fewer than 100 casualties, Paraguay inflicted nearly 7,000 losses, captured thousands of prisoners, and seized vast quantities of weapons and vehicles—many of which were reused in later operations.
The consequences were immediate and dramatic: the evacuation and fall of Fortín Ballivián, Bolivia’s most powerful stronghold in the Chaco, without a single shot fired. The defeat triggered a political crisis in Bolivia, leading to the dismissal of the high command and the overthrow of President Daniel Salamanca.
This battle proves that maneuver, intelligence, logistics, and leadership can defeat numerical and material superiority.
November 16 is now commemorated as the Day of the Paraguayan Infantry.
