In the past one month, BSE stock has faced two major shocks. First came the NSE expiry date change, which hit BSE’s derivatives business. And now, the Jane Street issue has again put pressure on the stock.
But the big question is – how much more can BSE fall?
To answer this, we need to understand that 55% of BSE’s operational revenue comes from Futures & Options trading. That’s ₹470 crore out of ₹611 crore in the March quarter, just from derivatives.
Now, if Jane Street and similar firms reduce or stop trading – which is possible – it could seriously affect Options trading volume, which in turn would hurt exchanges like BSE and brokers too.
Even Zerodha’s founder said that 50% of FnO volume comes from such firms.
However, there’s also a silver lining. In Feb 2025, Jane Street didn’t trade for 2–3 weeks, and the market didn’t see a major drop in options volume. Also, BSE has other strong businesses – like Equity, Mutual Funds, IPOs, and Listing – which are showing good growth and could balance out the impact in the long term.
