On August 13, 1955, three white men shot and killed Lamar Smith, a 63-year-old veteran and voting rights activist, at the county courthouse in Brookhaven, Mississippi. Mr. Smith was just one of the many Black leaders murdered in the 20th century in the South, in places where the numbers of Black eligible voters could have changed the outcome of elections.
