In comparison to 40 years ago, the average American family now spends half their food budget on restaurant food. In 1977, just under 38 percent of family food budgets were spent eating outside the home.
Over the past 50 years, the health of Americans has gotten worse, and now 71% of Americans are overweight or obese—not 66%, which was reported 5 years ago.1 That means a staggering 100 million people in America are obese. Today, eating processed foods and fast foods may kill more people prematurely than cigarette smoking.
Why is junk food bad?
Eating junk food on a regular basis can lead to an increased risk of obesity and chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and some cancers.
Children brought up inside a fast food culture are especially vulnerable to fast food addiction cravings. With addictive foods making up the bulk of a growing child’s diet, the likelihood of developing a fast food addiction by adulthood increases considerably. In effect, fast food lifestyles not only compromise a person’s present-day health but also the future health of developing children and teens.
Fast food chains serve twice the recommended serving for an individual, But to the persons with a bigger appetite, it encourages them to eat more and turn out to be obese which links to other diseases.
