Gennett Records may be the greatest afterthought of an afterthought ever thought up! Most hot jazz fans know the story of the Starr Piano Company’s desire to tap into the phonograph market–and then by extension the phonograph record market–resulting in Gennett Records. The location of the company’s studio in Richmond, Indiana proved to be the perfect location for recording many of the midwest’s talented bands and orchestras. This set of 15 recordings is the first volume examining several of these bands, many of them lesser known to jazz fans and even record collectors. We’ll hear some early sides by hot novelty saxophonist and bandleader Jack Crawford, the only commercial release by the Muncie, IN based Riley’s Orchestra, a hot early side by Sol Wagner’s band, some fantastic drumming on the Art Landry version of “Some of These Days,” out and out heat from Bernie Cummins, the Miami Lucky Seven, the Virginia Entertainers, Ross Reynolds and many more! All of these titles were recorded using Gennett’s acoustical recording process, giving them that characteristic Gennett sound, though fortunately many of these copies are clean offering a better listening experience than usual.
