In May 1945, a routine sightseeing flight over the hidden 'Shangri-La' valley in New Guinea turned into a catastrophic disaster. The C-47 transport plane, the 'Gremlin Special,' slammed into a mountain, instantly killing 21 of the 24 people aboard. The three survivors—Corporal Margaret Hastings (suffering severe burns), Lt. John McCollum, and Sgt. Kenneth Decker—were left stranded in a remote valley surrounded by impenetrable jungle and towering peaks, hundreds of miles from help. Worse, the valley was inhabited by the Dani people, a Stone Age tribe isolated from the modern world.
